ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST HEART TRANSPLANT PERFORMED IN BERGAMO

It is with emotion and profound pride that we wish to share with you an anniversary of extraordinary importance for cardiac surgery and, by extension, for the International Heart School. This week marks the 40th anniversary of the first heart transplant performed in Bergamo on the night of November 22-23, 1985. This event marked a milestone in the history of medicine and cardiac surgery in our country and provided a decisive boost to the importance that the Bergamo Hospital has gradually acquired over the years, becoming today a national and international reference point for transplantation. Making this anniversary even more significant is the fact that the protagonist of that undertaking, the cardiac surgeon who, in agreement with Professors Parenzan and Invernizzi, courageously and competently led the team in the pioneering operation, is Dr. Paolo Ferrazzi, who has been the Director of the IHS since 2008, a position it had previously been led by its founder. Dr. Ferrazzi's experience, dedication, and example continue to inspire generations of doctors and students, strengthening the prestige of our school. This anniversary is not only a moment of remembrance, but also an opportunity to reaffirm the values that guide us: scientific excellence, innovation, and above all, commitment to solidarity and it underscores the role our School has played and continues to play in the education of cardiovascular disciplines.

On November 4, 2003, at the seat of the University of Bergamo in via Einstein in Dalmine, our 6 students from Uzbekistan, Iraq, Uganda, Ethiopia, Albania and Ukraine, after having presented their theses in front of the examining commission and the tutor, have obtained the II level International Master's degree in "Cardiology and techniques applied to Cardiac Surgery" from the University of Bergamo and Milan -Bicocca. Congratulations!
